I started drawing at school when I was 8. In the late 60’s I was lucky enough to meet Norman Wilkinson, the great 20th Century marine artist. He influenced me greatly, as I loved his style and traditional technique with watercolours. I use a palette very similar to his, though of course over the years one’s style and palette change as you find your own preferences.
I took up watercolour painting full time nearly 20 years ago. My work is mostly to commission, though I do exhibit in the Isle of Wight and Gloucestershire. I have been teaching watercolour painting since the middle 90’s when I was asked to be the resident artist in a hotel in Corfu. I have also taught in Marrakech, Alaska, Bahamas, French Pyrenees, Spain, Elba and now at Salters’ Hall!
My whole approach to teaching is to keep it as simple as possible. It is only by this apparent simplistic approach that confidence can be gained quickly in understanding how the medium works. The main priority is to have fun, and we do!
Ideally I like to keep the numbers to 6-8 people. I provide all the materials, so if you are trying out watercolours for the first time you don’t have to spend money until you need to.
